When your garage door suddenly stops working, it’s frustrating and inconvenient. Whether it won’t open, won’t close properly or only moves a little before stopping, there are a few common issues we see every week across the Sunshine Coast.
Here’s what’s most likely going on, what you can safely check yourself, and when it’s time to call Pioneer Garage Doors.
1. The Sensors Are Blocked, Dirty or Misaligned
Modern garage doors won’t close if the safety sensors can’t see each other.
What to check:
- Wipe dust, salt residue or insects from the sensor lenses.
- Make sure they haven’t been bumped or knocked out of position.
- Clear anything on the ground in the sensor beam.
Salt air and humidity on the Sunshine Coast make sensors fail more often than in non-coastal areas.
2. The Remote Battery Is Flat or the Motor Is Not Receiving the Signal
If the door won’t open at all, try replacing the remote battery first.
If it still doesn’t respond:
- The motor antenna may be bent or obstructed
- You may have interference coming from nearby devices
- The motor’s internal receiver may be failing
3. The Motor Has Reached Its Limit or Is Overheating
If the door starts moving then stops, the motor may be under strain.
Common causes:
- Humidity affecting the circuit board
- Extra friction from salt build-up
- Worn internal gears
- Unbalanced door putting pressure on the motor
4. A Broken Spring or Cable
A garage door spring does most of the lifting.
If it breaks, the door:
- becomes extremely heavy
- won’t lift properly
- may stop halfway or shudder
- may not move at all
This is dangerous to fix yourself, call a technician.
5. The Door Is Off Track or Jammed
If the door is crooked, stiff or scraping, it may be:
- off its tracks
- catching on a bent panel
- blocked by rust, sand or debris
- binding because the rollers are worn
Coastal homes often see rust and corrosion in tracks due to salt air and humidity.
6. The Manual Release Cord Has Been Pulled
If the motor runs but the door doesn’t move, the manual release may be disengaged.
Simply pull it down and back toward the motor to re-engage it.
7. A Storm or Power Issue Has Reset the Motor Limits
After power outages or storms, your motor may forget where the fully open or fully closed points are.
This needs a quick reset, Pioneer can do this safely and properly.
